Early Nutrient Deficiencies

With crops emerging and replant being taken care of, the next thing at the front of everyone’s mind is: how is my crop doing?

Whether it be poor weather conditions during planting or equipment errors, finding underperforming areas – specifically those affected by rescuable nutrient deficiencies – can be a saving grace for your yields at the end of the year. AgMRI can help spot where, how much is affected, and even help determine what caused a nutrient deficiency in a field, giving you early warnings so you can address the problem quickly and efficiently to make sure your fields will be ready for a bountiful harvest.

A prime example of our nutrient deficiency alert in full effect is present in one of our Central Illinois customer’s fields. When he logged into AgMRI back in May of this year, he noticed a new alert directing him to a nutrient deficiency. Since we use high-resolution cameras to provide insight down to 10 cm in the field, this grower clearly saw an equipment issue causing a problem. This specific example is on a potato field, which means liquid fertilizer is applied while planting, but that didn’t happen in certain parts of the field.

Guess what? The spots labeled under the alert as a nutrient deficiency were the spots that didn’t receive fertilizer during planting because of the machine error. An issue like this might be hard to find by simply looking through the images from this flight. With the help of the nutrient deficiency alert and the quantifying tool within AgMRI, this grower easily created a plan to fix the problem, mapping the affected area and deciding how much additional fertilizer he would need to reapply with a second pass on this part of the field. Having the ability to draw, highlight, and quantify areas of any field is just another way AgMRI is a step above the rest when it comes to a digital ag platform.

While mistakes aren’t ideal and things can be done to prevent issues, AgMRI’s insights make the job easier on the farmer when things don’t always go his way. Had this grower not made this decision, who knows what his yield would’ve looked like towards the end of the season. Knowing what he knows now, this will be something to keep in mind come next season to keep his costs low and ROI high.

When so many things are out of control, AgMRI helps put power back into the hands of the farmer.
