Changing it Up: Tillage

Evaluating and adapting how you manage your operation never truly stops. After harvest, growers’ minds shift to the next season, which is only a short time away. One thing that can be beneficial for any grower is evaluating what went well and what didn’t throughout the season.
Tillage is one way you can get ahead by preparing the soil to be most compatible with your seed and chemicals of choice during the growing period. This example of a Central Illinois potato field shows what a game-changing decision this can be.

Right: AgMRI’s Veg Row, which traces each row and visualizes the health of the plants in each row.

Using AgMRI, we noticed diagonal streaks running through the field. Harmless, right? Standing in the field, you could clearly see gaps running in a diagonal pattern. Countless plants along these lines in each row showed poor emergence. Reviewing our finds with the grower, he confirmed he used a ripper at that angle the previous fall.

You might ask, “Well, can you see the lines from the field?”  The short answer is no, not really – unless something has already alerted you to the pattern. There are several issues that can arise from tillage, such as poor emergence, soil damage, and the chance of stripping the soil of the nutrients. Using AgMRI to spot issues and follow their effects throughout the season can help you make changes to tillage practices to maximize yields in subsequent years.

Thanks to AgMRI, this issue was noticed and will be corrected the next time around. When so many things are out of control, AgMRI helps put power back into the hands of the farmer.
